For the Specialist Study assignment I had to research and critically examine the influence of historical and contemporary contexts and then respond to my research in my own practise. This enabled me to demonstrate a greater depth of understanding of the discipline I chose and my place within it.
I am very interested in Fashion Film (and am due to start a degree course in this subject in September), so I chose to look at study fashion filmmakers and photographers for this assignment, looking primarily at the work of Nick Knight, an artist who is known for his bizarre and often controversial work, which varies from working with fashion designers such as Gareth Pugh - making ground breaking fashion films - to photographing the Queen for official portraits.
I used this assignment to try and be as creative as possible, so that I could experiment with ideas and equipment to help give me further insight into what my FMP could be, and this exercise allowed me to discover what I think I wanted to create and what skills I wanted to further. As my project was based around recreating the work of another artist, I am able to pick out strong similarities between some pieces of Nick Knight's work and my own, particularly the collaborative film he made with the fashion designer Gareth Pugh and the filmmaker Ruth Hogburn.
Filming in the Photography Studio made me more comfortable using new lighting set ups (such as the re-heads and the 2K set up in the studio), and it also allowed me to get creative and not unnecessarily worry about anything going wrong, which was a really good opportunity for me to discover the type of work I want to be creating. The whole process was really beneficial in helping me discover what I would like to do for my FMP - which would have been similar to my film here - and it also gave me the confidence to commit to ideas without being afraid to try new things.
